Careers in Crisis
The Learning Need: Coaching when commitment is all but gone
The standards of employment are clear: an employee is expected to come to work when contracted. When there is no valid reason, those who do not are in breach of that contract.
Calls to Cover is a story about two nurses who were once very close, where one was the mentor to the other. But things have changed. Soon after having her baby, Dana found herself recovering from a car accident. After a career of over 20 years, Cory is not showing up for her shifts as dependably as she once did. Problems abound.
Participants are called to face their assumptions and conclusions about people. What appears to some as "malingering" on Cory's part is not so clear. Nor is the dedication of Dana. And the consequences of both action and inaction on the part of their leader are very high.
When they take action, participants find themselves facing challenges on many fronts. When they do not take action, nothing changes and they see that they are simply training the next generation to become just like the one before. They learn to walk between these two extremes.
This story has been successfully adapted to help members of the BC Nurses' Union.
Our nurse managers were finding difficult conversations… difficult. This workshop
helps them take the theory and feel it in action for themselves.
